Lafayette, LA –
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that motorists can expect a traffic shift on I-10 westbound between the Vermilion River and I-49. On Friday, September 20, I-10 westbound traffic will shift to the left onto newly constructed lanes. Leading up to the shift, nighttime lane and ramp closures began on September 15. The switch to the new lanes will be complete by 6 a.m. on September 21.

Once traffic is on the new lanes, the existing westbound lanes will be removed in order to be replaced. Traffic is anticipated to be in this configuration for the remainder of the project, which is expected to end in spring 2020.

The traffic shift is part of the widening project on I-10 that is partially funded by a $60 million FASTLANE grant and an additional $40 million grant, both received in 2016. A third widening project between LA 328 and LA 347 is expected to begin in fall 2019. Once all three projects are complete, nearly 15 miles of I-10 between I-49 and the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge will have new pavement and an additional westbound lane. I-10 eastbound will have an additional lane between I-49 and LA 347.

All dates and activity are weather dependent. DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with extreme caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.
