I-110 northbound fully open; southbound has lane closure

BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that both northbound lanes of I-110 in Baton Rouge are now open following the recent flash flooding that left this section of the interstate impassable. Crews have pumped out water to allow for a single southbound lane opening. In order to avoid high water in this area, motorists are advised to use the shoulder of the roadway.

Crews remain on site to monitor the conditions of the southbound travel lanes. On I-110 in Baton Rouge, under normal rain conditions, the pump stations in the area move water from the roadway to the nearby Capitol Lake. The portion of I-110 southbound that currently has high water is not influenced by the nearby pumping station and portable pumps were used to open a lane. The remaining water gravity-drains into the Capitol Lakes. However, the lake is currently at capacity, which results in water remaining on the roadway with no place to flow.

During unfavorable weather conditions, motorists should adhere to the following safety tips:

• Do not drive unless you must.
• Avoid driving into standing or running water.
• Avoid driving while distracted.
• Avoid using cruise control when visibility is low or road surfaces are wet.
• Always allow for extra driving time.
• Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles.
• Have your headlights on when using windshield wipers
• Never drive through areas with downed power lines or utility poles
