PROJECT UPDATE: Work progressing on major I-20 overlay project in Webster Parish

Minden, La. – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development provided an update on a $29 million project to overlay a section of I-20 from Dixie Inn in Webster Parish to the Bienville Parish line.

The project, which began in January 2016, is improving a nearly 10 mile portion of the interstate by removing the surface of the existing pavement (cold plane), followed by an asphalt overlay.

The purpose of cold planing a road surface is to extend the life of that roadway by decreasing the likelihood of rutting (the formation of low spots in the pavement), shoving (a washboard-like effect), and the development of an uneven road surface (including swells, bumps or sags).

The contractor, Madden Contracting Company, has completed cold planing and overlaying the westbound lanes of the interstate.

Currently, crews are working on overlaying the eastbound lanes, which will be followed by applying asphalt to the shoulder, permanent striping, and some guard rail work.

Once the project is completed, motorists will experience a greatly improved travel experience for this section of I-20.

There are currently lane restrictions in place in both the eastbound and westbound directions to allow the contractor to safely complete necessary work in these areas in order for the project to progress as scheduled.

The project is anticipated for completion in late 2017, with progress dependent on weather conditions.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site. Drivers should also be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.

Area residents should exercise caution when driving, walking or biking near an active work zone.
