DOTD to provide Motorist Assistance Patrol service in Monroe during U.S. 80 Louisville Bridge closure
MONROE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP) service will be provided on I-20 in Monroe during the U.S. 80 Louisville Bridge closure in an effort to minimize traffic delays.
The closure is part of the final phase of a project to rehabilitate the bridge. The final portion of the project involves replacing the bridge’s bearings.
The first closure will begin June 1 and will remain in effect for approximately four weeks. The bridge will then reopen to traffic until the second closure begins on July 10. This closure will also last approximately four weeks. In an effort to minimize the length of the closures and reduce impacts to motorists, crews will be working around the clock to replace the bearings.
The MAP unit will patrol I-20 between the Thomas Road and Texas Avenue exits and will work to move stalled vehicles out of travel lanes and assist local law enforcement in working other incidents. One MAP unit and tow truck will patrol this area from while the closures are in place.
The DOTD Traffic Management Center (TMC) will monitor the roadway from the traffic cameras in the Monroe area and notify the MAP driver of any incidents needing to be cleared. In addition, Louisiana State Police will be in contact with the TMC to report any incidents and to request assistance from MAP.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is committed to delivering transportation and public works systems that enhance the quality of life. In addition to more than 16,600 miles of roadway, including over 930 miles of interstate and 13,000 bridges, DOTD supports the development of the state’s aviation, marine and rail infrastructures. Through this work, we are able to facilitate economic development, create job opportunities, improve vital evacuation routes, and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.
