Project Update: US 71 in Shreveport to receive major roadway improvements

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces a $3.2 million project that will provide major improvements to a portion of US 71 (Market/North Market/Spring St.) in Shreveport, Caddo Parish.

The nearly three-mile section of US 71 from I-20 in downtown Shreveport to Hearne Avenue, both northbound and southbound lanes, will receive a complete mill (removal of part of the roadway surface) and asphalt overlay, as well as new pavement striping, adjustment of catch basins (storm drains), installing new handicap ramps, and retrofitting older handicap ramps.

Patching work is currently underway, which is completed prior to the asphalt overlay in order to ensure a smooth surface at the conclusion of the work.

This project is significant for this section of US 71, which sees approximately 25,000 vehicles per day, because this portion of roadway has not received any major improvements in more than 20 years. The last asphalt overlay on Spring St. and Market St. was completed in 1995. North Market St. was completed in 1999.

As a part of the patching and overlay project, motorists should be prepared for intermittent lane closures, sidewalk diversions, and street parking closures over the next few months. Additionally, there are nighttime and weekend work restrictions for the downtown area.

DOTD anticipates a late Fall 2017 completion, with progress dependent on weather conditions. The contractor is Best-Yet Builders, LLC., based in Shreveport.
