LAFAYETTE, La.--As an agency committed to the safety of the traveling public, it is always deeply troubling when we learn of any accident that occurs on our state roads. Today’s accident at the railroad crossing along U.S. 90 near La. 85 in Iberia Parish is no different, and is among the many reasons why we are working to enhance safety at this location.

Hearing concerns from the local community, DOTD recently completed a feasibility study to examine possible safety measures for this area. Long-term plans involve removing the crossing and installing an underground pipeline as part of the I-49 South project. Until that time, DOTD is currently in the process of making the following changes:

• Installation of advanced signage warning motorists to prepare to stop
• Installation of flashing beacons which will bring attention to motorists to prepare to stop
• Installation of signage indicating exemption of trucks from stopping at the railroad crossing

While the Department continues to work with local and state officials to implement a long-term solution, we encourage businesses moving goods along this section of the U.S. 90 corridor to re-examine standard operating procedures and policies that could further aid in enhancing safety at this location. We also remind all motorists to practice the following driver safety tips.

• Slow down
• Be attentive
• Avoid driving distracted
• Allow for extra driving time and additional room between vehicles
