West Monroe - H.002622.6 - LA 616 (Arkansas Rd) Widening and Roundabouts
DOTD has recently started a project that will widen a 3.4 mile stretch of Arkansas Road (LA 616) between LA 143 and Caldwell Road from two lanes to four lanes and add a center turn lane. The project was awarded to Gilchrist Construction Co. in November 2016 for $32.9 million and will replace the following signalized Arkansas Road intersections with roundabouts: Forty Oaks Farm Road, Good Hope Road, Kiroli Road and Warren Drive (LA 617).

There are three schools within the stretch of Arkansas Road that will be widened. The locations of the planned roundabouts that will replace signalized intersections are also access points to these schools.

Roundabouts are one-way circular intersections designed to improve safety and efficiency for motorists by reducing conflict points, such as left turns, which cause crashes at traditional intersections. Roundabouts also will improve traffic flow, especially at peak times, at those particular intersections.

The current phase includes tree trimming and clearing in order for the utilities to be adjusted over the remainder of this year. Roadwork in anticipated to begin in April 2017.

Even though through traffic will be maintained at all times during the project, there may be minor delays with intermittent lane closures and traffic will be maintained through the use of flaggers.
