Baton Rouge, La.— On Monday, Jan. 23, University of New Orleans civil engineering students Dillan Crawford and Crystal Suggs were each awarded $1,000 scholarships and honored at DOTD’s headquarters in Baton Rouge, La.

Awards were presented by DOTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D. “DOTD is delighted to support these well-deserving students in their academic endeavors,” Secretary Wilson said. “These future transportation leaders represent some of the best and brightest of Louisiana in the civil engineering field at six state universities, and we hope these scholarships inspire them to achieve new heights.”

The awards are made possible by a scholarship program funded by the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO) in conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC).

Crawford and Suggs were selected from among some of their top peers across the state by transportation officials from DOTD, LSU, Southern, UNO, Tulane, ULL, McNeese, and Louisiana Tech.

SASHTO scholarships are given each year to juniors and seniors in civil engineering in Louisiana universities with a professed interest in the transportation field. Applicants must not only be in good standing academically, but their grade point average is a major consideration in evaluating their application. Students are also required to submit a one-page description, outlining how their curriculum choices support their interest in the transportation field, and they are given additional credit for having worked for DOTD in either the summer engineering or co-op programs.

Students can apply through the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department at their respective university. Scholarship recipients are also eligible to reapply in subsequent years.
