BATON ROUGE, LA - Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that in the next six to ten months, bids will be taken on an estimated $20 - $30 million project to rehabilitate the I-210 Bridge over Prien Lake in Lake Charles. The project will involve re-decking the main navigational bridge spans, as well as making additional improvements.

Approximately 50 years old, the I-210 Bridge plays a critical role for the I-10 corridor by serving as an alternate route and major thoroughfare for local traffic.

“Replacing the main span bridge deck now will greatly extend the life of the bridge and ensure that DOTD can accommodate industrial expansion in the area,” said DOTD Secretary Sherri LeBas.

In addition to replacing the main span bridge deck, the department will enhance the bridge to include more modern bridge railing and new roadway lighting for more efficient travel. Additionally, a safety inspection walkway will be installed under the bridge to make future bridge inspections more cost efficient and less disruptive to the traveling public by reducing the need for lane closures.

With funding currently available, construction is anticipated to last approximately 24 months and will require a reduction of one lane in each direction for most of the project’s duration. To shorten construction time, DOTD will provide contractor incentives for completing the project as quickly as possible. Maintenance and closures on I-210 will also be coordinated in order to minimize traffic impacts.

As replacement of the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge remains a top priority, rehabilitation of the I-210 Bridge will allow it to be in the best possible condition through the construction of a new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge.

The I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge replacement project is currently in the environmental study phase, which is estimated for completion in mid-2017.
