PROJECT UPDATE: Eastbound traffic swap for I-20 major rehab project, Bossier Parish
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that as the I-20 major rehabilitation project in Bossier City continues to transition into the final phase of construction (Phase 3), there will be a necessary traffic swap for the eastbound direction.
On the nights of Wednesday, February 5th and Thursday, February 6th, traffic will be swapped on I-20 eastbound from the outside travel lanes to the newly constructed inside lanes from the Red River Bridge (beginning lane closure area) to just east of Hamilton Road.
This swap will require intermittent full closures of I-20 eastbound beginning at 8:00 p.m. each night to allow the contractor to move the concrete barriers in order to begin the demolition and removal of the remaining outside lanes in the eastbound direction as part of Phase 3. The interstate will be re-opened each morning by 6:00 a.m., though the intermittent closures are anticipated to be conducted in brief intervals.
Eastbound motorists will be able to exit at the Benton Road off-ramp (Exit 20B).
The remaining lanes in the westbound direction will be swapped in the coming weeks. Additional information will be sent when that is scheduled.
As a reminder, Phase 3 includes the full reconstruction of the outside travel lanes from just east of Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive, as well as the reconstruction of the ramps at the Barksdale Blvd, Benton Road, and Airline Drive interchanges.
The previous phase (Phase 2) comprised the full re-build of the inside travel lanes and the ramps at the Old Minden Rd. and Industrial Drive interchanges. Those interchanges will be re-opened in the coming weeks once the outside travel lanes have been completed at these locations. The eastbound on-ramp at Industrial Drive is open to traffic and will not be impacted by this project.
The project is currently approximately 64% complete, and is anticipated to be complete in late 2025/early 2026, weather and other factors permitting.
DOTD would also like to remind motorists that the I-20 rehabilitation zone in Bossier City from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive remains prohibited to commercial motor vehicles such as 18-wheelers due to narrow lane widths. CMV drivers should utilize the primary detour of I-220.
Additionally, through travelers on I-20 are urged to utilize I-220 to avoid construction delays.

Safety reminder:
DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Area residents should exercise caution when driving, walking, or biking near an active construction zone.
