PROJECT UPDATE: I-20 major rehabilitation project, Bossier Parish

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that the I-20 major rehabilitation project in Bossier City is making continued progress into the final phase of construction (Phase 3) with a traffic swap for the eastbound direction scheduled to begin on the night of Monday, December 16, 2024.

This operation involves shifting traffic onto the remainder of the new travel lanes between Old Minden Road and Airline Drive, which requires a closure of I-20 for eastbound traffic. A previous swap onto the new lanes from Airline Drive to Industrial Drive has already occurred.

This nighttime closure will take place from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. over the course of six nights.

During these closures, the contractor will be moving the concrete barriers to direct drivers onto the newly constructed inside lanes, and applying the necessary temporary roadway striping.

Eastbound motorists will be able to exit I-20 at either the Benton Road (LA 3 – Exit 20B) or Barksdale Blvd. (US 71 – Exit 20C) interchanges. The I-20 eastbound on-ramp from Airline Drive will remain open during this work.

The contractor has already begun demolition of the existing pavement on the outside lanes of I-20, a process that will continue over the next several months. Work to construct the roadway base for the new outside lanes will begin in early January 2025.

As a reminder, Phase 3 involves removing and fully reconstructing the outside lanes of the interstate from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive in both directions, as well as rebuilding the ramps at the Industrial Drive (currently underway), Benton Road, Barksdale Blvd, and Airline Drive interchanges.

The I-20 project webpage provides a variety of resources and updates as work progresses. Click here to access that page.

The entire project is anticipated to be complete in late 2025, weather permitting.

Restrictions/Permits: Total road closure at the specified location. All vehicles will need to utilize an alternate route.

Alternate Route: Eastbound traffic on I-20 will be detoured to the Benton Road (LA 3 – Exit 20B) or Barksdale Blvd (US 71 – Exit 20C) off-ramps. The I-20 eastbound on-ramp at Airline Drive will remain open during these nightly closures.

This work will be performed WEATHER PERMITTING.
