DOTD to remove pedestrian crosswalk facility on LA 1 (N. Market St) in Shreveport
SHREVEPORT – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will soon be removing a pedestrian crosswalk facility that was installed in 2007 at the request of the state legislature.
The crosswalk, which functions as a pedestrian refuge island, is located in the 4600 block of LA 1 (N. Market Street), about five miles north of downtown Shreveport.
Beginning Tuesday, September 24, 2024, motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on N. Market Street in both directions near the intersection with N. Lakewood Drive to allow DOTD crews to begin the process of removing the components of the crosswalk and repairing/restriping the roadway.
The removal process is anticipated to take approximately three weeks, weather permitting.
As part of HCR 68 from the 2023 Regular Legislative Session, DOTD was asked to reevaluate the location of the crosswalk due to safety concerns over a history of vehicles leaving the travel lane and striking the facility, as well as crashing into nearby homes.
DOTD has conducted the necessary pedestrian studies and determined that the crosswalk facility, which includes signage, guardrail, bollards, fencing, and button-activated flashing beacons, is not warranted in its current location.
