DOTD announces project to build roundabout on LA 6 in Natchitoches
NATCHITOCHES – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces a project that will transform safety and traffic flow along a portion of the LA 6 corridor near I-49 in Natchitoches.
The $4.4 million project was awarded to Regional Construction, LCC and includes the construction of a two-lane roundabout at the intersection of LA 6 and LA 504, just east of I-49, along with repairs and improvements to the roadway approaching the roundabout along both LA 6 and LA 504.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 18, 2024, and will kick off with any necessary clearing and grubbing, detour road construction, and drainage improvements.
In order to allow for construction of the roundabout and roadway approaches, traffic detours at some points in the project will necessary. Appropriate signage will be in place directing motorists through and/or around the work zone.
An open-house public meeting for this project was held in May 2023 to provide information about the plans for construction, and explain why this configuration will be beneficial to handle traffic flow from continued commercial development in the area.
Well-designed and planned roundabouts bring numerous advantages to an intersection. These include a significant reduction in congestion and wait times, ease of access for nearby homes and businesses, and greatly improved safety through the elimination of traditional conflict points that have the potential to lead to crashes.
The entire project is anticipated to wrap up in late 2024, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that can impact construction timelines.
