DOTD urges caution as winter weather continues to impact portions of the state

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development reminds the public that the recent winter storm continues to post potential hazards, even with significant melting in many areas occurring during the day today, January 17, 2024.

Temperatures will drop back below freezing tonight, creating possible ‘black ice’ conditions and slick portions of roadway. Black ice is a thin coating of glaze ice on a surface, particularly on a street, that is difficult to see.

Throughout this winter weather event, DOTD has strongly urged motorists to only travel if absolutely necessary, and that continues to be the message into tonight.

DOTD crews in affected areas will continue to perform de-icing operations on bridges & overpasses, efforts that have been fully underway since Sunday afternoon in several regions of the state.

If you must travel, it’s best to adhere to the following driver safety tips:
  • Drive slowly and carefully
  • Avoid driving while distracted
  • Always allow for extra time
  • Avoid using cruise control
  • Reduce speeds when visibility is low
  • Leave plenty of room between vehicles
  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Be on the lookout for DOTD crews and other emergency responders and equipment
  • Remember that it’s unlawful and unsafe to drive around a ‘road closed’ barricade for any reason.
  • Put blankets or warm clothing in your vehicle, along with water and snacks in the event you get stranded.
