JEFFERSON, La. - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development offers an update on the ongoing Sauve Road at the Soniat Canal Bridge, which is being replaced by Jefferson Parish.

DOTD provides oversight on the project and assisted Jefferson Parish in the bid process, which used 100% federal funds obtained from the Federal Highway Administration.

The $832,000 project removes and replaces the existing, Jefferson Parish-maintained bridge, which was built on timber piles in 1960 and has outlived its useful life. The bridge was closed to traffic in November 2020.

The contractor, Buck Town Contractors & Co., recently encountered unforeseen concerns regarding underground utilities and materials from the existing bridge, which resulted in a change to bridge design, delaying the projection’s completion to May 2021. DOTD has been in contact with state Rep. John Illg, Jr., who represents River Ridge, and is committed to take the necessary steps to expedite this project, as requested by the Jefferson Parish council through a resolution.

DOTD encourages drivers to be cautious and aware when driving near construction zones.
