DOTD announces installation of new cameras, message boards on US 165 in Monroe

Motorists along US 165 in the Monroe area of Ouachita Parish are now able to get a bird’s eye view of traffic conditions to better plan their travels along the busy corridor.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces the installation of new traffic cameras and Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) that are now available live to the traveling public via the 511LA website and mobile app.

“Investing in technology that provides long-term benefits to all motorists who use our transportation system is hugely important,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of these new traffic cameras, map out their commutes, and look for travel alerts on the new message boards. A critical factor in safe and efficient operation is information and how it is used.”

The $2 million project involved adding six live-stream cameras and associated equipment, as well as two DMS at the following locations on US 165 north and south of I-20:
  • US 165 and Finks Hideaway Rd. (camera)
  • US 165 southbound before Forsythe Bypass (DMS)
  • US 165 and Forsythe Bypass (camera)
  • US 165 and Ferrand St./Northeast Dr. (camera)
  • US 165 southbound after DeSoto St./Breard St. (DMS)
  • US 165 and Renwick St. (camera)
  • US 165 and Winsboro Rd./LA 15 (camera)
  • US 165 and Richwood Rd. #1/MLK Dr. (camera)
The traffic cameras, which are already available at other locations in the Monroe area such as along I-20, are monitored in real-time by operators in the Traffic Management Center. This allows the TMC to post traffic and emergency messages on the DMS, tweet incidents on the regional DOTD traffic Twitter accounts, and update www.511la.org with the latest road conditions.

511LA mobile app users are able to create a profile and receive customized alerts for traffic conditions on their routes, as well as access the live-stream cameras.

US 165 just north of I-20 services an average of approximately 48,700 vehicles per day.
