Statement from DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson regarding work zone fatality
Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 10:08:34 AM
This morning an employee for a DOTD contractor was killed when a vehicle in a work zone allegedly collided with equipment that ultimately made impact with the worker. I would like to express the sympathies from the entire department to the family of the victim, his coworkers, and the company for which he worked. This is a somber reminder that safety on the roadway is of the utmost importance and that drivers must be extra diligent when in or approaching work zones. This particular work zone is on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge where contract workers are conducting joint repairs during non-peak driving hours. Our partners at Louisiana State Police are currently investigating the incident.

Follow these simple rules to help make the roadways safer:

  • Don’t drive distracted
  • Don’t drive impaired
  • Follow directions from the signs
  • Buckle up

Sincerely,

Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D.
Secretary, LA DOTD
