BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development reminds motorists to practice extra caution and use traveler resources when traveling on the roadways during the Thanksgiving holiday beginning Thursday, Nov. 24 through Sunday, Nov. 27.

Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D., announced that oversize and overweight vehicle movement on all state highways will be prohibited on Thursday, Nov. 24, through Sunday, Nov. 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The prohibition does not apply to the Secretary’s Sept. 2 waiver order for debris removal or the Secretary’s Nov. 22 waiver order for housing units and mobile classrooms that authorizes specific routes for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Wilson said the decision was made in conjunction with Louisiana State Police to provide maximum safety for motorists traveling on state highways during this holiday.

The Department’s Truck Permit Office will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25.

DOTD reminds motorists to follow these safety tips:

• Wear a seatbelt.
• Do not drive while impaired.
• Do not drive while distracted.
• Obey all traffic laws and signs.
• Move over for emergency vehicles, when possible.

For traveling convenience, motorists can access up-to-date information about road conditions, construction activities, traffic cameras, travel times and other critical incidents by visiting the 511 Traveler Information System website at www.511la.org. Travelers can also access this information by dialing 511 from their telephone. The voice-activated 511 Traveler Information System is available to most wireless and landline telephone users. Out-of-state travelers can access the system by calling 1-888-ROAD-511 (1-888-762-3511).
