BELLE CHASSE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has implemented a new notification system using Twitter to notify motorists about Belle Chasse Bridge activity in Plaquemines Parish. The system will provide real-time notifications to subscribers advising them of the status of the bridge.

The application will allow Belle Chasse Bridge operators to select from a list of pre-formatted messages, or tweets, under the Twitter handle @BelleChasseBrdg. Once a message is selected, the application automatically sends it out to motorists subscribed to @BelleChasseBrdg via their personal Twitter account.

Bridge operators will send out a tweet each time the draw bridge is raised or lowered. They will also send out other tweets for traffic related activities such as bridge and/or tunnel closures, accidents on the bridge and/or in the tunnel, and other traffic related information that subscribers should be made aware of.

Motorists can access the latest updates on real-time traffic and road conditions using the 511 Traveler Information System by dialing 511 from their telephone and saying the route or region on which they are seeking information. Out-of-state travelers can call 1-888-ROAD-511 (1-888-762-3511). Travelers can also access this information by visiting the 511 Traveler Information Web site at www.511la.org. Additionally, real-time around-the-clock New Orleans traffic updates can be accessed via Twitter @NOLA_Traffic.
