LA 23: Happy Jack to Port Sulphur – State Project No. H.012105

PLAQUEMINES PARISH
, La. – This week, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development began a $1.7 million project to replace cross drainage and overlay La. 23 from Happy Jack to Port Sulphur, La., in Plaquemines Parish.

“This project will be a tremendous asset for the people of Plaquemines and those who work in the vital industries of the area. Local officials have been very supportive of this need,” said Senator John Alario, who sits on the Governor's Task Force for Transportation Infrastructure Investment.

The project will resurface the travel lanes of the two-lane section of La. 23 between Happy Jack and Port Sulphur, nearly four-miles. Additionally, turn lanes will be constructed at Civic Drive, Freeport Drive and the entrance to the Plaquemines Medical Center.

“The complete overlay of Hwy. 23 from Happy Jack to Port Sulphur exemplifies the state's financial commitment and recognition of the importance to this artery, not only to the community, but to the region,” said Representative Chris Leopold. “I applaud DOTD for this and look forward as we work together to eventually four-laning this same area, giving us the best access to the Gulf for industry and the best evacuation route for the citizens of Plaquemines Parish.”

Motorists may experience daytime lane closures between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., or nighttime closures between 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., depending on daily construction activities.

The estimated completion timeframe is spring 2017, which is subject to change pending weather, change orders and any additional work requests.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction zone and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.
