U.S. 61 (Tulane) Claiborne to Carrollton Improvements Project in Orleans Parish

DOTD is committed to delivering projects that promote safety, efficiency, and provide multimodal capability. There appears to a misunderstanding of the modification that’s being made to the Jeff Davis bike path as it crosses Tulane Avenue. Below is a conceptual drawing (A) of the modification to the bike path. The relocation of the path does not require the cyclists to cross Jeff Davis twice as has been rumored. Just after the project was let, the paths in the original plan were modified to better align with the crossing. It was never our intent to eliminate the crossing but only to move it closer to the intersection and in front of the stop line as can be seen in the below plan sheet (B) from the Environmental Assessment report for the project. We believe that requiring bicyclists and pedestrians to cross the intersection in front of the stop line is much safer than requiring to them travel between stopped vehicles as it currently exist. Feel free to contact us should you have further questions or any other concerns at dotdcs@la.gov.
