COVINGTON, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces an update on the project to widen La. 21 from Bootlegger Road to 11th Avenue in St. Tammany Parish, a $16.8 million capacity improvement project.

Current activities include the following:

• Crews milling/removing remaining old roadway; equipment and crews scheduled to begin removing old bridge within next two weeks; drainage crew scheduled to work on east side of roadway in about three weeks.

• Some traffic switched to one new southbound lane two weeks ago.
o Temporarily reconfiguring the traffic pattern will allow the contractor to do more work in the middle section of the roadway in preparation for another shift with northbound traffic going onto the southbound lanes, in about a month.

Last month, the southbound lanes were poured and crews constructed concrete driveways, curb transitions, casted catch basin tops, graded embankment and other miscellaneous tasks ahead of this month’s traffic switch. (See photo)

The current completion timeframe is spring 2017, which is subject to change pending weather, change orders and any additional work requests. DOTD project engineers continue to work with the contractor to maintain steady progress and complete construction as efficiently as possible.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction zone and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.
